I made a handy guide to help you! Check it out here.
To get legally married in Michigan, you need to meet three key requirements:
Be at least 18 years old.
Be unmarried to anyone else.
Obtain a marriage license from the county clerk’s office.
For Michigan residents, the marriage license must be requested from the county where either you or your partner reside. If you’re coming from out of state, you must apply for your marriage license in the county where the ceremony will take place. Once you have your license, you’re ready to get married anywhere in Michigan!
-
To obtain a marriage license in Michigan, you and your partner will need to provide three forms of identification:
An unexpired driver’s license, state-issued ID, or county-specific ID card.
Your birth certificate (does not need to be a certified copy, but must be issued by a government office—not a hospital certificate).
Your social security number (just the number itself is fine).
For internationally-born applicants, you can use the following in place of a birth certificate:Green card
Unexpired Employment Authorization Card
Naturalization Papers
Valid passport (U.S. or foreign, with acceptable visa status if applicable)
Canadian or Mexican birth certificates (if translated)
Marriage License Fees:In-state applicants: $20
Out-of-state applicants: $30
There is a 3-day waiting period after applying, and the marriage license is valid for 33 days. If you need your license expedited, a small fee applies.
Learn more about the process here, where I go in depth about requirements, fees, and more.
